What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is a worldwide non-profit organization founded in
1924 dedicated to improving communications and leadership skills. Members are
comprised of people from all walks of life including students, business people,
and professionals.
How does it work?
A Toastmasters
meeting is a
learn-by-doing workshop in
which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly
atmosphere.
Members learn communication skills by starting with the Competent Communication manual,
a series of 10 speaking assignments designed to instill the basics of public speaking.
The
prepared speeches will develop your
body language, vocal variety, eye contacts and more.
With
impromptu speaking, you will learn
to think on your feet. Evaluations will
provide you with effective and constructive feedbacks.
All of this will happen at your own pace.
Your club members will support you continuously from your beginnings all the
way to your first speech: The Ice
Breaker.
Toastmaster
also gives you the opportunity to develop further leadership skills. During
meetings, you will be exposed and you will learn from the following roles:
- Ah counter: You will notice fillers and you will soon
be able to avoid them yourself.
- Timer: You
help to improve punctuality and time management.
- Grammarian: You will improve on grammar and enrich your vocabulary.
- Table Topic: You will learn to speak on your feet, no
matter what the topic is.
- Fine Master: You will improve your attention to
details.
- Listener: You will develop better listening skills as well as attention
to details.
- Chairman: You will learn how to chair meetings.
- Evaluator: You will learn how to give constructive feedbacks.
- Parliamentarian: You will learn the basics of parliamentary
procedures and democracy.
All of the Toastmasters
program is well structured and organized for you. You can take the
Communication track or the Leadership track or both tracks. In toastmasters, we
learn by doing.
When you are more
comfortable with the basics, you can take further roles in your club and become
a Club Officer. The are officer roles and leadership roles such as President of
the Club, VP Public Relation, VP Education, VP Membership, Club Treasurer,
Sergeant At Arms, and more.
Moreover, further
leadership roles can be obtained beyond the club level, at the district level,
the area level or the regional level. Over time, you will notice and your
friends will noticed that your have: "TRANSFORMED THROUGH
TOASTMASTERS"
Access to other clubs
Toastmasters
also gives you the opportunity to participate in meetings in other
